Faqs

Q. What are the signs of a failing septic system?

The first signs of a failing septic system may include: slow draining or gurgling drains and pipes in your home, plumbing backups, a sewage odor, swampy ground or even greener grass in the area of your septic system (signs of water leakage).

Q. How often should I have my septic tank pumped?

Typically every 2-3 years for normal household usage. Our technician will assess and recommend once they do an inspection.

Q: How do I keep my septic system healthy?

Because septic systems rely on bacteria to break down the waste material, it is important that you don’t poison these micro-organisms. Even small amounts of paints, solvents, thinners, nail polish remover and other common household compounds flushed or poured down the drain can kill the bacteria that break down the organic matter in the wastewater. Household disinfectants such as laundry bleach or toilet bowl cleaner can be used in moderation without affecting the operation of the septic system; however, overuse of disinfectants can kill the bacteria in a septic tank. Less is always best.

Q: Do you have any tips for maintaining my septic system?

Some manufacturers promote the use of septic tank “cleaners”, “starters” or “enhancers” to aid in the digestion of the waste. These products are typically of little value and are not recommended. The best way to ensure your septic system is working optimally, is to schedule regular inspection and maintenance with a qualified technician. Keep pumping frequency to three years or less, depending on your individual situation. We can help.

Q: What should I not put in my drains?

Avoid putting anything into the septic system that doesn’t break down naturally (THIS MEANS NO BABY WIPES!!!) or that may take a long time to break down. Materials such as oils, grease, and fat, disposable diapers, tampons and their holders, condoms, paper towels, facial tissues, cat box litter, plastics, cigarette filters, coffee grounds, egg shells, and other kitchen wastes, should NOT be put into the septic system.

Q: Are portable toilets environmentally friendly?

Yes! Portable toilets are exceptionally friendly for the environment when serviced by a professional. Having a portable toilet at your site or event can prevent human waste from washing into drains and nearby streams. Untreated waste can poison bodies of water and spread diseases that harm local wildlife. Portable toilets are a responsible way to keep our Earth and water bodies healthy.
